Backbone Network

UMnet Backbone

The UMnet Backbone is one of three University of Michigan backbone data networks that connect a building's local area networks (LANs) to the Internet.

On-Campus Backbone Connections

U-M Ann Arbor Campus buildings and data centers are connected to the UMnet Backbone through Distribution Layer switches.

Off-Campus Backbone Connections

Off-campus locations of U-M departments and units can connect to the UMnet Backbone in various ways.

U-M Backbone Interconnect Network (UMBIN)

The UMBIN interconnects the three main campus backbone networks to the state network (Merit) and beyond to the Internet and to private educational and research networks.

U-M Virtual Firewall

The U-M Virtual Firewall Service is a network security service available to academic and administrative units on the Ann Arbor campus.

Internet2

Internet2 is a national and international collection of interconnected high performance data networks.

Michigan LambdaRail (MiLR)

MiLR is a very high-speed, special purpose, data network that provides connections to national and international research and education connection points throughout the world.


Network Operations and Support

UMnet Administration

UMnet Administration coordinates and maintains the U-M networking infrastructure and provides support to network administrators.

Network Operations Center (NOC)

The NOC monitors networks, including backbones and departmental LANs, and provides first-level troubleshooting for customers' networks 24/365.

Maintenance & Repair Service Agreements

Service agreements with ITCom provide maintenance and repair services to departments.


Network Access

Residential High-Speed Internet Service

The University provides high-speed Internet access in residence halls via ResComp and in Northwood Community Apartments via the Northwood DSL Network Service.

Students, staff, and faculty members who live in group houses or in private residences can obtain high-speed Internet access through any number of commercially available Internet service providers.

Wireless

The U-M Wireless Network is available to all U-M students, faculty, and staff.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The U-M VPN is available to all U-M students, faculty, and staff.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

The DHCP service automatically assigns network IP addresses.


Cabling & Circuits

Station Cable and Communications Outlets

Communications outlets wired with station cable provide room connections to voice and data networks.

Circuits

ITCom installs and maintains UMnet Backbone Circuits and Point-to-Point Circuits.
